My name is Michael Jones.  I am a FAA Certified Part 107 Small Unmanned Aircraft Pilot.  I am also a professional photographer that has always had a fascination with  flying.  So you can imagine when drones and quadcopter with cameras hit the scene, it was a perfect dream combination for me.  So I

turned my then "still photography" business, into an aerial media data company.  I have been flying for about

3 years now. The company now does aerial marketing for businesses including real estate, tower and roof inspections, weddings, events, aerial orthomosaic maps and more.  We currently operate in the eastern NC

            AS A DRONE PILOT MYSELF, I HAVE FLOWN 100's OF PROJECTS, AND REAL ESTATE FLIGHTS CAN BE THE MOST

DIFFICULT OF THEM ALL. THIS IS BECAUSE WHAT'S CONSIDERED "CLOSE FLYING” WITH MULTIPLE OBSTACLES

AND HAZARDS.  I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU GET TRAINING AND SPEND HOURS PRACTICING BEFORE YOU FLY

                  OVER A PROPERTY THAT YOU DON’T OWN.

FOLLOW THE RULES

BE SURE YOU KNOW, AND FOLLOW EVERY FEDERAL, STATE, AND CITY DRONE REGULATION.

FAILURE TO DO SO CAN PUT THE GENERAL PUBLIC AT CONSIDERABLE RISK AND/OR YOU AND YOUR BROKER COULD FACE SOME STIFF FINES FROM THE FAA OR LOCAL AUTHORITIES.

HOW TO HIRE A PROFESSIONAL DRONE PILOT

HIGH QUALITY DRONES ARE MORE ACCESSIBLE THAN EVER BEFORE, AND IT SEEMS AS THOUGH IT WOULD BE EASY TO GET ONE AND SHOOT YOUR OWN VIDEOS, BUT GETTING AN FAA UAS PILOTS LICENSE, LEARNING TO FLY, EDITING VIDEOS, GETTING INSURANCE AND SO ON, MAY NOT BE FOR YOU. HIRING A PROFESSIONAL DRONE SERVICE IS A GREAT OPTION FOR THOSE WHO DON'T WANT TO DO IT ON THEIR OWN.

 

BEWARE...NOT ALL DRONE SERVICES ARE LEGITIMATE

MY FIRST BIT OF ADVICE IS TO STAY AWAY FROM CRAIGSLIST WHEN LOOKING FOR A PRO. THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE GONE TO BEST BUY AND PURCHASED A DRONE AND THINK THEY CAN SIMPLY GO OUT AND TAKE A FEW PICTURES FOR AGENTS AND MAKE AN EXTRA BUCK, BUT 99.999% ARE NOT EXPERIENCED, NOT PROPERLY LICENSED OR INSURED, NOR KNOW WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY SITUATION. THIS CAN GET YOU, YOUR CLIENT AND YOUR BROKER IN HOT WATER WITH THE FAA OR EVEN WORSE IF AN ACCIDENT HAPPENS.

8 TIPS FOR HIRING A DRONE SERVICE

-WEB SEARCH YOUR AREA FOR REPUTABLE DRONE COMPANIES IN YOUR AREA 

(THERE IS NO FAA DATABASE TO SEARCH YET)

-HIRE ONLY FAA UAS LICENSED PILOT, AND ASK TO SEE THEIR PART 107 SUAS PILOT’S LICENSE

(THIS LOOKS SIMILAR TO A DRIVERS LICENSE).

-VERIFY PROOF DRONE INSURANCE COVERAGE, NOT JUST GENERAL LIABILITY COVERAGE AND FAA REGISTRATION OF THE DRONE.

-ASK FOR A REFERENCE FROM OTHER AGENTS IN YOUR AREA.

-ASK TO SEE SEVERAL SAMPLES OF THEIR WORK.

-BE SURE THEY SPECIALIZE IN VIDEO, AERIAL DATA (such as orthomosaic maps)

(NOT JUST STILL IMAGES).

-SPEAK TO MORE THAN ONE COMPANY AND ASK FOR FIRM QUOTES.

-ASK THE PILOT TO CHECK THE PROPERTY ADDRESS TO VERIFY IT ISN’T IN RESTRICTED AIR SPACE BEFORE YOU HAVE THEM COME OUT TO A LISTING.  ***ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE NEAR A MILITARY BASE OF ANY KIND***

FINAL THOUGHTS

-AS A PILOT, THESE ARE COMMON THINGS I TELL ALL MY CLIENTS

-YOU NEED TO HAVE GOOD EXPECTATIONS OF TIMING DUE TO WEATHER. YOU CAN’T SCHEDULE A FLIGHT FOR A SPECIFIC TIME, BUT CAN WORK WITHIN WINDOWS OF TIME.

-NOT ALL PROPERTIES ARE LOCATED IN A FLYABLE AREA.

-NOT ALL LISTINGS CAN BENEFIT FROM DRONE VIDEOS.   ( ESPECIALLY WITH NEIGHBORS WITH NOT SO TIDY YARDS)

-YOU CAN ALWAYS SHOOT ME AN EMAIL AND ASK ME TO CHECK A PROPERTY ADDRESS FOR ITS “FLYABILITY”.

-THERE ARE ALWAYS THINGS OUTSIDE MY CONTROL THAT EFFECT THE FINAL PRODUCT. BE PREPARED FOR UNEXPECTED CHANGES.
